Why is my customers credit card not being accepted?

When my customer is trying to pay via the link sent in SMS text message or email, the system keeps declining their card.

For fraud minimisation our 'card not present' system (payment by link) only accepts Australian issued credit cards. International cards are accepted however with 'card present' transactions using either the Stripe hardware reader or using iPhone Tap to Pay.
